ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced an ambitious plan to provide 40,000 electric bikes (e-bikes) to the public at subsidised prices, aiming to promote eco-friendly transportation and reduce the country’s reliance on fuel imports.
The announcement was made by Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, during a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday.

The minister highlighted several incentives designed to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan:
- Investment Opportunities for Foreign Investors:
The government is offering attractive incentives to foreign investors for establishing electric vehicle production plants in the country. - Environmental and Economic Benefits:
The introduction of e-bikes and other electric vehicles is expected to reduce pollution and significantly cut Pakistan’s oil import bill. - Subsidy Allocation:
A subsidy of Rs. 4 billion has been allocated for the promotion of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. - Soft Loans for E-Bikes:
To make the transition easier for the public, banks will offer soft loans for the purchase of e-bikes. - Reward for Academic Excellence:
As part of a special initiative, 120 electric motorcycles will be distributed free of cost to top-performing students to recognize and reward academic achievements. - Charging Infrastructure Expansion:
The government plans to establish 3,000 charging stations nationwide to support the growth of electric vehicle usage.
Punjab Government’s E-Bike Scheme Update
The Punjab government has also expanded its Chief Minister Youth Initiative for e-bikes.
- Increased Allocation:
The number of allocated e-bikes has been increased from 20,000 to 27,200, following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. - Special Considerations for Students:
- Orphaned students will receive free bikes under the scheme.
- All female students who applied for e-bikes will also receive their two-wheelers.
- Loan Approvals and Distribution:
The Bank of Punjab has approved loans for 20,000 students to purchase bikes.- So far, 7,500 bikes have been distributed, with more deliveries occurring daily.
