In a recent report from Faisalabad, journalist Naeem Faisal highlighted the growing frustration among farmers. With wheat crops already maturing, harvesting is expected to begin within a month. However, the Punjab government has yet to declare a minimum support price (MSP) for wheat, leaving millions of farmers in financial distress.
Punjab, the country’s agricultural hub, has cultivated wheat over 16.2 million acres this season. Farmers are demanding a fair wheat price to ensure their financial stability. Sardar Zafar Hussain, the president of Pakistan Kisan Board, has taken legal action by filing a petition in the High Court. He warned that if the judiciary does not intervene, farmers will take to the streets, with major protests planned in Faisalabad and Lahore.
Farmers Demand Wheat Support Price of at Least PKR 4,500 per 40kg
Former Parliamentary Secretary Rana Zahid Tauseef has also voiced his concerns, urging the government to set a minimum wheat support price of PKR 4,500 per 40kg. He emphasized that failing to provide relief to farmers would lead to a severe agricultural crisis.
Tauseef further stated that last year’s flawed government policies resulted in a lower wheat yield, forcing Pakistan to import wheat worth billions of dollars. He stressed that if the government adopts a pro-farmer policy this year, it will not only secure farmers’ livelihoods but also ensure Pakistan’s food security.
He criticized the government’s decision last year to not purchase wheat directly from farmers, calling it an injustice that led to reduced production and financial instability in the agricultural sector.
Pakistan’s Food Security at Risk Without Proper Wheat Policies
Experts warn that if the government does not intervene with farmer-friendly policies, Pakistan will once again face a wheat shortage, forcing costly imports. Given the ongoing economic crisis, ensuring a stable wheat price and timely procurement is crucial to preventing another food security crisis.
With farmers already struggling due to inflation and rising input costs, the government must act swiftly to set a fair wheat price. Will policymakers listen to farmers’ demands, or will protests erupt across Punjab? The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future of Pakistan’s wheat production and food security.
